 Low Vision Essentials for Rehab Professionals

At the end of the seminar, the participant will:

  • Review basic eye anatomy and visual functions.
  • Differentiate between normal vision changes associated with aging and major age-related diseases that cause low vision.
  • Gain knowledge of the demographics of low vision in the USA.
  • Experience the effects of various types of vision loss (e.g., central vision loss, etc.) on functional tasks.
  • Learn intervention strategies to facilitate functional performance.
  • Identify resources for people with vision impairments.
  • Learn about professional resources in low vision rehabilitation.

The Nuts and Bolts of Low Vision Rehabilitation

At the end of the seminar, the participant will:

  • Review basic eye anatomy.

  • Gain a basic knowledge of visual functions and how they are measured.

  • Gain a basic understanding of “standard” refraction and its impact on function.

  • Differentiate between normal vision changes associated with aging and major age-related diseases that cause low vision.

  • Know the basic definition of low vision.

  • Differentiate between the terms low vision, blindness, and legal blindness.

  • Gain knowledge of the demographics of low vision in the USA.

  • Experience the effects of various types of vision loss (e.g., central vision loss, etc.) on functional tasks.

  • Know about side effects associated with vision loss.

  • Understand the potential progression of vision loss from impairment to a handicap.

  • Gain basic knowledge of functional low vision evaluations.

  • Understand optical principles and their application in optical devices.

  • Learn about strategies to maximize remaining vision.

  • Learn about strategies to compensate for vision loss.

  • Know about interventions to facilitate home safety.

  • Know about interventions to facilitate effective reading and writing.

  • Know about interventions to facilitate health literacy and health management.

  • Learn how to guide a person with low vision through an unfamiliar environment.

  • Know about interventions to facilitate community participation.

  • Learn about community services and resources for people with vision impairments.

  • Learn about the role and scope of professionals in low vision rehabilitation.

  • Identify resources for learning more about low vision and low vision rehabilitation.
